Menstuff® has compiled the following information on the IRL 17
race schedule for 2010. Only 17 races this year (down to 13 in the
US) but at least they have chosen fewer ovals. Unfortunately,
combining IRL and Champ Cars has reduce open wheel racing exposure to
U.S. fans, cutting the number of sponsors, teams, tracks,
TV coverage and race exposure considerably. Remember,
eliminating Champ Car cut the Atlantic Series as a feeder series and
also reduced exposure to Formula BMW, AMLS, Formula Drift, Historics,
and other race venues that received exposure from Champ Car. My
favorite race weekend was the Streets of San Jose which significantly
broadened the ethnic base to open wheel racing. While in previous
years there were races up and down the West Coast, IndyCar has only
one in Long Beach and one north of San Francisco leaving San Jose,
Portland, Laguna Seca, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and other potential race
sites high-and-dry. The merger might have been profitable to
IndyCars, but it sure hurt a lot of others. And, now, taking one of
the races and traveling to Brazil - how does that give all of the
US race fans a benefit. It leaves 13 US tracks, 13 US dates, and
an average (with the exception of the Indy 500) of only 22 cars on
the track. How sad that greed has taken over open wheel racing. With
no competing series, the monopoly cuts back.
