Bio

Sam competes in Karting with the Mosport Kart Club in Ontario, with her two brothers. She races in Junior Heavy against a very large male dominated field, and loves the competition.

Hey, I’m Sam Metauro. I’m 15 years old, and yes, a girl. This is the first year that I’ve raced Karts, and I am in the Junior Heavy class. A couple of years ago I practiced in my brother’s Kart, but didn’t race because I wasn’t very good at all, but I can honestly say that I have come a long way. I think I was afraid of the speed and competition, but now I love it! Karting is very important to me because it’s different and not too many people do it. It’s not everyday that you meet a girl racer, and I like being different. I like telling people that I Kart because then they ask about it and I get to tell them all they want to know and how much fun it is.

There is a lot of dedication that goes into Karting. I would say my least favourite part about it is waking up at 5 am or sometimes even earlier. But I would also say that it’s definitely worth it. Sometimes I also have to adjust my schedule with my friends or other events that happen on weekends due to races. I used to dislike Karting because it would take up time to be with my friends, but then I realized that I could meet new people there and make even more friends.

When I first started Karting in 2006, I was very intimidated because I was racing with a whole bunch of guys who have been doing it longer than me. It’s a very competitive sport, and it takes a lot of work to get good at it, but I have put in all my effort, and by the end of the 2006 season I wasn’t intimidated anymore because I had worked hard and learned a lot. Like all sports, you have to practice a lot, and have the patience to take out of your own time to work at it. It’s not as easy as it may seem. There are critical techniques that you have to learn, such as on corners, passing people, and even just preparing your kart off the track. Racing in the rain is also a whole other story because there is a whole other set of rules you have to learn for it. Personally I love racing in the rain, because as my dad says, it’s the equalizer. Rain makes everyone’s speed equal and its pretty easy to get used to, the only problem is sometimes you can’t see that far in front of you, or where the next corner is.

Overall I would say that I have a great passion within Karting, and it is something that I would love to continue for a long time. It’s something that has new obstacles to overcome every time and there are always challenges to seek out. I have only been doing it for one year, which means that I still have a lot to learn and a lot to practice. It never becomes old or boring, and I love have that little bit of adrenaline in my life! Below are some pictures from the 2006 season and there will be more to come!

Samantha made her rookie debut in 2005 with a firm commitment to Karting during the winter of 2005-2023. She did not disappoint! On her first practice day she pushed her engine so hard she broke the exhaust a rocker arm in two by maxing out her RPM at 6700 at the end of a long straitway. Sam pushed her Kart and herself in this manner all year and left it all on the track.
