Jennifer tests A3 Single Seater Race Car at Kyalami - 9 December 2005
The A3 Series will be the fastest circuit racing formula in South Africa, and will no doubt become the highlight of the national racing scene. In addition, the highest placed South African driver will be rewarded with a test and evaluation by A1 GP Team South Africa.

Friday 9 December 2005 saw many accomplished racing drivers, young racers and motoring journalists experience the A3 on the Kyalami Grand Prix circuit. The exciting new formula has the basics of a Formula 3 race car but in a far more cost effective and user friendly one make category. This should become the logical step up from karts, Formula V, Formula Ford to high performance single seaters and ultimately A1.

Jennifer commented, "It is amazing how much confidence downforce and wide slicks give a driver. In the Formula Ford you are permanently in a four wheel drift, the A3 feels like it is on rails. The sequential 5 speed gear box is also an absolute pleasure and more power is always fun!"

Final Round Formula Ford National Championship 2005 - Kyalami
Electrical problems ruined testing and untill the last practice session I had only completed about four laps! In the final test session after replacing the alternator and the battery the car finally ran properly, I was delighted to be second quickest!

It started raining during qualifying and we hurriedly fitted the wet weather tyres and qualified seventh.

Race one started well and I looked forward to moving up through the field. However as the race progressed the tyres seemed to fade. Although I was in touch with the group in front of me I could not challenge for a better position. I finished sixth on Armani Jamrozinski's gearbox.

The second race was a lot more fun. I had a good race with Michael Atkins, swapping positions regularly. Close to the end of the race we caught up to Marc Murray and Jayde Kruger who were fighting over third position. I finnished a close fifth and enjoyed the last race of the season.

Another ex-karter making a mark in international racing

The Formula Woman Nations Cup Series Challenge lived up to its promise with two thrilling races around the 2.443 mile Rockingham Motor Speedway today (Sunday). The showcase races, the precursor to next April and May’s official eight-round Nations Cup Series, saw Natalie Butler upholding honours for England to take double victory ahead of Jennifer Murray (South Africa) and Lauren Gray (Australia) in race one and Margo Gardner and Murray again in race two

Jennifer Murray achieved a third place finish, despite a spin, in a Jamun Racing FF Mygale on her debut at Brands Hatch on 18 September 2004 in the Avon Clubman Formula Ford Championship race. The 21-year old Graphic Designer from South Africa had been leading the race before the aforementioned spin. However, even better news emanated from the 33rd. Formula Ford Festival at Brands on 17 October when Jennifer came across the line in the Final in her Mygale SJ01 in a fine thirteenth place overall, just 13.843 seconds behind winner, Daniel Clarke.

Career

In 1994 at the age of eleven Jennifer started racing in the 60cc Junior Class in karting. The following year she received the Most Improved Junior Driver Award.

In 1997 she moved up into the 100cc Stock Class and finished 5th in the National Championships in 1998 and 4th in the National Championship in 1999.

In 2000 she entered the premier formula, 125cc Grand Prix Karts, the only category in karting that has a six speed gearbox, front-wheel brakes and a manual clutch. Jennifer achieved pole position at two National events, won two National races and finished 4th for the year in the South African Championship.

In 2001 racing took a backseat to school work as she was in her matric year. None the less she finished 4th in the Southern African Rotax Max Challenge Series 2001 and qualified to participate in the Rotax Max Challenge World Final in Langkawi, Malaysia, January 2002. She matriculated with university exemption.

The world final in Langkawi was hard racing considering that Jennifer was not only the youngest competitor but also the only woman taking part. She qualified 15th in her group, and was about 4 tenths of a second off the ultimate pace. Unfortunately her weekend was cut short when a spark-plug failed at the beginning of one of the elimination races.

In June 2002 Jennifer had her first Saloon car race. This was a baptism of fire as she was entered in a Engen Polo Cup National Championship event. It rained heavily in the morning practice at the Aldo Scribante circuit, severely limiting her practice time. Nevertheless she qualified 15th out of 28 competitors, and finished 15th overall after spinning off the track. The race was very challenging for her because she had never raced a saloon car before.

In 2003 she participated in the East Cape regional saloon car series which she lead for a while. This is a time-based handicap series and she moved up to a higher class where the car was no longer competitive. She also participated in Grand Prix 125 events when these did not clash with the saloon car events. One pole position and one race win. In 2003 she also completed her Graphic design and Web Publishing course.

Jennifer was approached by Nino Venturi (Formula Ford Association chairman) in November 2003 to test drive a Formula Ford. She thoroughly enjoyed the experience and viewed this as a stepping stone to a possible career in single seaters in the US or Europe. She was selected as the Formula Ford development driver for 2004/2005. Ford Credit, Investchem and kart.co.za came on board to make this possible.

The Kyalami Grand Prix circuit was Jennifer's leap into the deep end. With only one outing in this strange car she entered the first National Championship event at this very challenging circuit.
