Candace Muzny Ties Best Finish of the Season at Hickory Motor Speedway

Candace Muzny returned to Hickory Motor Speedway on Monday, September 6 for the 34th Annual Bobby Issac Memorial, qualifying and finishing second in the non-points race at the famed short-track.

Muzny earned her best starting spot of the season and qualified second with a time of 15.35. After facing difficulties in qualifying throughout the season, Muzny was glad to be starting up front in the 150-lap race.

“Honestly, we have been struggling so much in qualifying lately that I couldn’t believe it when I looked up and saw 15.3,” Muzny said. “I had to do a double take! I was really proud, especially with my parents in town. L.W. Miller and our team gave me an awesome racecar.”

Muzny was fast from the drop of the green-flag, holding her second-place position until the first caution on lap 18. She restarted in second-place on lap 24 but fell to third the following lap. She quickly gained her spot back, returning to second position on lap 29.

She avoided trouble through two multi-car wrecks on lap 44 and lap 66, and continued to race in second position. Muzny fell to third on the lap 72 restart and slipped to fourth on lap 93. She restarted in third position on the final restart on lap 138, racing her way past the No. 32 and reclaiming second position on lap 141. Muzny went on to finish the 150-lap race in second position, matching her best finish at Hickory Motor Speedway.

“With the long race, I knew that we needed to save our tires to be there in the end,” explained Muzny. “I just planned to stay in the top-five and really go for it the last 50 laps. We did just that, but we fell just one spot short. I would like to thank my sponsors Arrow Wrecker Service and Manale Landscaping for all their support. They allow us to race every weekend and achieve our goals. I also want to thank my parents, Al and Vanita Muzny, for always believing in me. I tend to do better when they are in town to watch, and I really wish they could be here every race.”

Although she was happy to finish in second-place, Muzny continues to look for her first win.

“I am still beating myself up for not winning because we were so close, but I know we will get it done,” said Muzny. “Our crew works so hard and we deserve the win. I want it more than anything, for them and for myself. We have come a long way together and I hope there are many wins in our future.”

Muzny will return to Hickory Motor Speedway this Saturday, September 11. Her last points race of the season will be the following Saturday, September 18. Currently the Oklahoma City, Okla., native sits in fifth position in the Hickory Motor Speedway Bojangles Late Models point standings.
