The other female driver also comes with a rally racing background. Erika Detota from Passaic, NJ joins Team Broken Racing with boyfriend William Petrow, who has also entered the Rallycross event. Erika plans on piloting her usual rally car that won 1st place at the International Rally New York and competed at the 2009 New England Forest Rally.

Her amazing pace at learning such a tedious and male dominated sport is largely in part to her coach and navigator Jason Smith. “It’s great to see a woman excel in rally. She is tasting the success of all her hard work which is well deserved,” says Jason.

Throughout her first season Erika has donated space on her car to the organization “Keep A Breast” which strives to educate and prevent breast cancer through awareness- A female piloted rally car has become a medium to discuss and draw attention to the growing disease. To find out more about the organization please visit: www.keep-a-breast.org or find Erika at this weekend’s Rallycross events.

Erika looks forward to racing with Kristin, “having more than one woman racing is always a treat and it is happening more and more. There are a handful of promising young woman who are surfacing in the sport which is so awesome to see!”

Chute, Kristin - rallycross driver, first Amercian female Rallycross competitor with co-racer Erika Detota.

A few items from the reveal is a more powerful 2.5l RS motor with ExedyPerformance Clutch transferring the power have been installed. “This will be a big jump in power for me, hopefully about 60 horsepower,” says Detota.

Mary has various experience in the sport from car prep, crew and most notably co-driving, the team is confident she will prove to be a great addition. This season will be Erika’s first time focusing on racing in NASA Rally Sport events, which kicked off it’s season March 2nd in South Carolina at Sandblast Rally. International Rally New York Finale of the season

The final round of the 2011 United States Rally Championship was held last weekend in the foothills of New York’s Catskill Mountains. Teams from as far away as Colorado came to test their mettle on some of the roughest roads in the series. Defending USRC 2WD National Champion, Erika Detota and her co-driver, Brian Johnson, were among those battling to reach the finish.

Day one took its toll on the team. First a flat tire on the second stage slowing them down followed by a sheared drive axle on the seventh stage left them stranded and out of contention. “The new roads were awesome, but the traditionally run stages took a beating from the rainy fall weather. They were very rocky and ultimately cost us the day. We’re hoping to get the car repaired tonight in order to take advantage of the Super Rally rules and restart tomorrow morning” said Detota. USRC Super Rally rules allow teams who suffer repairable mechanical failures to fix them and re-enter on the next day of the race.

When day two began anew the team was quick from the outset, netting a pair of 2nd fastest stage times while moving their way back up the standings. By day’s end, Detota and Johnson were well ahead of their 2WD competition in the regional portion of the rally. However, their inability to finish the first day left the them unable to hold onto any chance of retaining the USRC 2WD title that Detota held for the 2010 season with co-driver Jason Smith. For 2011, Detota received 3rd place in the championship with 1st going to past winners Michael Reilly and Josh Benthien.

Co-driver Johnson said after the event, “Erika drove her best at this rally and I think that was evident to her fans. With a brand new livery and sponsors, Erika wanted to make sure to give maximum effort, which she did, even after the goal of winning the championship was no longer attainable.”

Continuing her partnership with the Keep A Breast Foundation, Erika’s new light blue car also welcomed some additional supporters. Grand Prix NY, a local go kart track joined for the event and Rally Armor made a pink decal mud flap with proceeds going to the Keep A Breast Foundation. “It is really fun to bring together my sponsors for breast cancer awareness month” said Detota, “I am looking forward to teaming up with more companies to further spread awareness next year!”

Erika would like to thank her partners and supporters, Keep-A-Breast.org, Grand Prix NY, Rally Armor, Broken Motorsports, Big Boulder Park, Exedy Racing Clutch and media partner Flat Out Promotions for their generosity, time and product support.

Erika Detota uses Rally Car Races to Educate Youth on Breast Cancer Prevention

We are so excited rally car driver Erika Detota donated her time to influence the lives of her fans at the New England Forest Rally. The press stage prior to the race was set up at the rally for journalists and media related attendants to accompany a driver for a ride on an actual race stage for what is called “shakedown” or practice stage for the drivers to get re acquainted with the conditions. Erika decided that instead of taking press around that she would take Caitlin Riviere on her first rally ride experience, and educate her on how to lower her risk for breast cancer!

“I got to go for a ride in a female driven rally car and received some great information on Keep a Breast! What more could I ask for?” said Caitlin after her ride with Ms. Detota.

The rally went well for Erika, setting some impressive stage times and in a great position going into Day 2. A few miles into a very long rough stage Erika got a flat tire and lost a great deal of time getting to a safe place to change it. Her co-driver and coach Jason Smith is happy to report success at their first gravel event together. The team is competing in the United States Rally Championship this year where they are in first place in the 2-Wheel Drive class. Expect to see more of Erika – her car will be the one on the track with the KAB stickers racing September 6-7 at International Rally New York!
