About What's Under the Icon At the Top

At the beginning of the ceremony initiating them into manhood, Bassari youths walk toward their village in single file, having spent their first night in the sacred forest nearby. They wear chicken feathers on their heads and grass skirts around their bodies, and they carry red banners to indicate that they are in a state of transition. For a period of two to three months, the initiates will visit the forest regularly to complete a series of rituals overseen by the village elders. These rites are dedicated to Numba, the mysterious chameleon deity of initiation. Senegal. Men of the African Ark calendar, Pomegranate
