Held annually at the end of Ramadan, the Sallah ceremony honors the Emir and his royal court in Katsina, northern Nigeria. Thousands of riders parade through the old town, paying their respects to the Emit. The social importance of horses is reflected not only in their elaborate trappings but in the number of titled officials who care for and dress them. Originally responsible for the maintenance of Fulani warhorses in the Katsina cavalry, these highly respected men now groom and equip horses for ceremonial events, and accompany members of the royal family at all public occasions.
